About a year ago we moved into our house, and I was so excited because that meant there was an ENTIRE house just waiting to be decorated and made into a home. It quickly became clear that even though I wanted to decorate my little heart out, I did not have the funds to decorate an entire house. I was going to have to get crafty trying to furnish this place.
Now, frugality is something I've spent the majority of my twenties trying to master and understand. I would spend the last dime I had if I found the perfect pair of shoes even if they only went with one outfit (seriously, I would...but at least I have a pretty good shoe collection to show for it). I'd like to think I've learned a few lessons about responsible spending in the last few years, and now I fully embrace my inner do-it-yourselfer (yep, I just made up that word--use it, it sounds legit).
I find so much more satisfaction seeing an old piece of furniture come to life after a little lovin' and a few coats of paint than having something store bought (I never thought I would say something like that). It is amazing the treasures that people are willing to let go for next to nothing! I am not complaining though- keep the deals coming!! I have redone several pieces of furniture so far, and each piece has been more fun than the last.
Like this coffee table for our living room I scored off Craiglist for $20
It was a horrible shade of green that I painted the perfect shade of white.
I love how it turned out! I wanted a really light and airy feeling for our living room, a mix of old and new, and this coffee table fits right in. Lately I've had a thing for topiaries too. I love the touch of green and structured elegance they add to a room. I got the small topiary on the table for $5 at Michael's.
Love it.
